Submergency

Submergency is an interdisciplinary collective of artists, researchers and marine scientists, united by a philosophy of art-making; to create art in collaboration with rather than about water. We understand water to be an active force and not a passive subject; engaging with that agency is fundamental to our collective.

We believe that artists have an opportunity to challenge dualistic thinking by seeking a different way of relating that invites environmental stewardship and collaboration. Our philosophy of art-making, with rather than about, is an experimental methodology designed to challenge the presumption that humans are separate from their surroundings, and to re-shape our own and our audiences’ relationships with water. Our work invites audiences to embrace the intricate entanglement between us and waterways.
